We wanted an area where we could experiment with various kinds of vegetables and flowers. It occured to use raised bed would be a good way to have easy access to all sides of the plant without back breaking bending and stooping. The raised beds you see here were created by stacking, in some cases, or single railroad ties then filling the resultant area with dirt. The beds are about 16 ft. long and 3.5 ft. wide. We picked that width so we could sit on a tie and reach into the planting area for planting, weeding and harvesting. | |

We plant bush beans in one raised bed. The beans are easy to pick this way, just sitting on the edge of one of the supporting railroad ties and reaching into the bean plant makes the job a quick and easy one. We still mulch in the raised beds just like the mulch garden. The mulch keeps the weeds discouraged and helps hold moisture in the ground.
